CHAPTER TWENTY-ONE

Desil somehow managed to get to sleep eventually. He awoke in the morning to Beatrix and Kirnich entering their shelter. Judging by their smiles, everything was just fine with them.

“I’m starving,” Kirnich announced. “I wish we knew when we would eat.” He picked up a training sword off the ground. “Are you ready?” he asked Desil.

“No. I didn’t sleep well.”

“They could put you against Krepps tomorrow. You need to be ready.”

Beatrix said, “We convinced them to wait two days.”

“And who knows if that means two days from yesterday morning or from when it was announced, just after the arena fights. They could challenge him tomorrow, for all we know.”

Desil got out of bed. “There’s something more important than training that we need to discuss.”

“There’s nothing more important than training,” Kirnich insisted.

“There is. Leida.”

“We can’t do…” The warrior stopped himself and took a breath to let out his obvious anger. “I agree that she is important, but there’s nothing we can do to help her right now.”

“Are you suggesting giving Fatholl the akorell?” Beatrix asked Desil with concern in her voice.

“No, but you’re going to like that idea better than what I’m going to tell you.”

Kirnich heaved out a loud breath in irritation. “Desil, you can’t go after her. You’ll never get her out alive. At best, you’ll be captured.”

At least I’ll be with her. No, that’s a foolish thought. “I won’t get caught. I got you and Beatrix out of prison, didn’t I?”

“Are you talking about the first time or the second?” Kirnich asked.

“Exactly.”

“I ask because each situation was different, and both of those are different from the one Leida and Basen are in. Why aren’t you speaking of rescuing him as well? Do you know something?”

“You spoke with her last night, didn’t you?” Beatrix asked.

“I didn’t plan it.” The first time. “But it happened. She’s given up on life! I’m worried she might kill herself as soon as she has the opportunity.”

Beatrix squinted at Desil, no doubt using psyche to confirm the truth of his outburst. She then gave Desil a compassionate look. “Did she tell you where she was?”

He didn’t answer.

“I see,” Beatrix concluded. “So she told you she doesn’t want you to help her.”

“She will be thankful after it’s done.”

“Where is the headmaster?” Kirnich asked Desil.

“She wouldn’t tell me. I think he left to look for us.”

Kirnich put up his hands. “Then you need to at least wait until he finds us. He does know where Leida is. He also knows the possibility of getting in and out without being seen. If there is even the slightest chance of rescuing Leida without giving up the akorell, he will say so.”

“What if he never finds us?”

“He will, and the Wind Knights will as well. Soon,” Kirnich punctuated, then grabbed Desil’s shoulder. “Getting yourself killed will do no good. It hurts me too to hear the fragile state of Leida’s mind, but that gives you even more reason to train. Let me teach you how to kill.”

“I thought you would just teach me how to stay alive.
